How Rake Is Calculated in Online Poker

Before a room can return rake, it has to measure it. This guide explains the main calculation methods and why the difference between them matters.

Two ways to split rake across a table

Dealt rake distributes the fee equally among all players who were dealt cards, regardless of whether they played the hand. Weighted contributed rake allocates the fee in proportion to the chips each player put into the pot. A player who folds pre-flop pays less under weighted contributed; they pay the same as everyone else under dealt.

Caps limit the rake per hand

Most rooms cap the rake per hand — for example at €3 or €5 depending on the stake level. A cap protects players in bigger pots but can also reduce the total rake generated at higher stakes, which in turn affects how much rakeback is available.

Points systems add a layer of conversion

Some rooms do not return rake directly. They award points at a fixed rate (for example 100 points per €1 of rake) and then allow players to convert points to cash or bonuses at a published rate. The effective rakeback percentage requires both figures to calculate.
